The meeting began at 7:05pm with the President welcoming the 21 members and 2 guests who attended. The main feature was a talk and power point presentation by Committee member Gerald Marfoe on the planet Saturn. Some of the features he mentioned were Saturn’s rings, Titan the largest moon, 61 moons discovered, orbit period -29.4 Earth years, rotation period -10.656 hours, equatorial radius – 60,268 km, mass – 95.16 of Earth’s, atmosphere primary components – hydrogen and helium, ring system most extensive in the solar system extending millions of kilometers. He also talked on the highlights of Cassini – Huygens mission which captured the true colour image of its magnificent rings, bright storms in a region of high atmospheric activity, equatorial region displays of swirls and eddies, more ice at the edge of rings.
Mr Marfoe gave a lot of information on this fascinating planet which evoked interest and prompted questions. At the end of the lecture (7:40pm), members and guests proceeded to the rooftop for viewing. However, the sky was hazy and not a lot could be seen.
