Meeting of 17 October (Cosmology) and 25 September 2010

 

COSMOLOGY GROUP

The Cosmology group met at the home of member Mark Mohammed on Sunday 17 October. Honorary Life President Dr Maura Imbert spoke on ‘Goldilocks Planets’, that is, planets just at the right distance from stars for their existence. A lively discussion followed which included other astronomical topics. A delicious tea courtesy Mr & Mrs Mohammed was enjoyed by all following the meeting.

MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 25

Due to inclement weather, viewing was not possible on this night. Also, only a few members showed up and there were some brief discussions on varied topics before closing.

 

 
Meeting of 12 September (Cosmology) and 28 August 2010

 

COSMOLOGY GROUP

On Sunday 12 September the Cosmology Group met at the home of member Mark Mohamed. Member Leonard Baldwin spoke on Ancient Astronomy and occupation of earth by aliens, some of them regarded as gods. He gave details much to the interest of members present. As in past meetings hosted by the Mohameds, refreshments were served which included Sawine (courtesy Mrs Rahamut), in keeping with Eid ul Fitr celebrated just two days before.

 

MEETING OF AUGUST 28

At this meeting we continued observing the skies from the rooftop – naked eye, binocular and telescopic – which included Spica, planets Venus and Mars, Alberio (double), the tail of Scorpio (double and clusters), NGC6231 and other object of interest. Observations lasted about 1.5 hours.

 

 
Meeting of 31 July 2010


The meeting started at 7.15pm with a quiz on the constellations Hercules and Lynx. Star Maps were then distributed to those present. The group broke up into teams and each team was shown how to interpret and read the Star Map. Mr Barrow also gave a talk on different telescopes and their advantages and disadvantages.

 

Following this, Past President Dr Maura Imbert was presented with an ‘Honorary Life President Award’ in appreciation of her 38 years of serving as President of the Society. In presenting the Award, Mrs Bazie mentioned the highlights of Dr Imbert’s presidency – trips, camps, lectures, international liaison, Observatory - to mention a few. The meeting ended with light refreshments.
